Switchfoot was quintessential.

More than worth the hour and a half drive to San Diego. It was the last night of the tour, they were home, in their element, the crowd was insane, they played a totally random set - half-improvised on the way... Jon was the complete gem of a human being he always has been, down-to-earth and no-nonsense and record deals? hit singles? high-profile tours? a big giant whatever, from all of them.

Even Luke, for whom SF isn't normally his "type" of music (bless 'im - as for me, I don't really have a type), was impressed with the amazingly tight show they put on. They were at their absolute peak during those two hours. And the harmonica! And the guitar-eating! Bueeeee. The latter made my night.

I couldn't help feeling a bit proud of the band as I watched them. Having been there from "the beginning", like most of the other people present - witnessing them slowly become less and less anonymous to the rest of the world - made the night feel so personal, almost like a celebration. They're one of those bands that has always been relevant to me, and perhaps always will be... because they speak of what matters, and that doesn't change. The timeless questions, and our battles with them - for better or worse.

Anyway. All I know is I love 'em, and this show has become one more reason.

And now I need some sleep, like, desperately. Wow, I am so screwed tomorrow morning.

Goodnight!
