Christmas on the Farm

Dec 26, 2013 12:53

Another Christmas has come and gone, and I'm spending Boxing Day lounging around nibbling on turkey bunwiches and chocolate, interspersed with napping.  This is the way a Holiday should be enjoyed!  ;)

Mom arrived from Calgary on the 22nd, and plans to stay until the 29th, but that will largely depend on the weather.  There seems to be a window of opportunity on Sunday, but failing that she might be stuck here until next Thursday (not that I'd mind!)

Gifts were exchanged on Christmas Day of course, starting with the opening of smaller items in the stockings. This was followed by a traditional (for us) breakfast of fried Perogies left over from the Christmas Eve feast, mushroom-sauce, sour-cream, as well as bacon and eggs. No hot chocolate this year though - we ran out and there wasn't even enough milk left to make real hot chocolate from milk, sugar, and cocoa. (We had milk for the children, but not enough extra for the adults. I will have to see about picking up more milk tomorrow when the stores open again.)

The horses got a Christmas treat of fresh carrots - except for Charles, because he won't even taste a carrot, much less eat one. It's not that he wouldn't like one - but they're something he hadn't seen before, and he refuses to try anything new. He has seen carrots before, and he knows the other horses eat them, but he simply outright refuses to even taste one, and then stands around sulking because everyone else is eating something. Stubborn old fart! I'm not sure when he did it, but our neighbour Dwayne brought us another hay-bale and put it in the barn, apparently in the wee hours of the morning on Boxing Day.

Gift Opening was followed by Napping, which was followed by Christmas Supper: Roast Turkey, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Peas & Carrots, Brussel's Sprouts (yuck!), "Orange-Kissed" Yams, Apple-Cabbage Salad, and of course lots of gravy! We had planned to watch a movie after the feast, but everyone was so out-of-it by the time it was all taken care of (dishes washed, left-overs put away, etc.) that we just called it a night and went to bed. Which brings us back to today, which (as mentioned) was spent doing little more than just relaxing all day. I'll have to go in to the shop tomorrow, but my plan is to just work on paper-work, no mechanical work. I've earned a few days rest, afterall. :)
