Turn in the Weather

Dec 27, 2013 12:48

After wonderful weather for Christmas and Boxing Day, the weather is about to get ugly starting this evening.  I heard a mention of this on the radio as I drove in to the shop this morning, and checking the Environment Canada website for the area confirmed it.  On the plus side, maybe it means I can convince my Mom to stay with us for a few more days.  ;)

Blowing snow warning for
Shaunavon - Maple Creek - Val Marie - Cypress Hills issued

Reduced visibilities of less than 1 km expected in snow and blowing snow tonight and Saturday morning.

An Alberta clipper will track from Southern Alberta this evening into North Dakota on Saturday. A band of 5 to 10 cm of snow can be expected across much of Southern Saskatchewan tonight and Saturday morning. Strong northerly winds gusting up to 70 km/h will develop overnight over Southwestern Saskatchewan on the back side of this system. These strong winds combined with the falling snow will create poor visibilities in snow and blowing snow with visibilities less than 1 km at times especially over open areas. Conditions should improve Saturday afternoon as the winds subside and snow tapers off.

Special weather statement for
Shaunavon - Maple Creek - Val Marie - Cypress Hills continued

Drastic change in the weather coming tonight.

A sharp cold front is expected to slide southward through Saskatchewan later today into tonight. Ahead of the front very mild temperatures generally at or a few degrees above zero will prevail. By tonight however, a low pressure system tracking across Southern Saskatchewan will push a cold front southward spreading snow and rapidly falling temperatures in the wake of the front. The worst conditions are expected overnight into Saturday morning when the snow is expected to intensify, with widespread accumulations of 5-10 cm by Saturday morning accompanied by northerly winds gusting up to 60 km/h giving poor visibility in snow and blowing snow. Temperatures are expected to drop into the minus double digits, with wind chill values in the -25 to -35 range by Saturday morning. Holiday travellers should be aware that road conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout tonight into Saturday morning. Gusts could be as high as 70 km/h in the Cypress Hills early Saturday morning and localized blizzard conditions are possible there.

In the wake of this system, bitterly cold temperatures will prevail for the weekend through new year's evening...With some hint of a warm-up as 2014 begins.
