My little mare has a pretty sparse (and sensitive) mane, so I've picked up a few tricks for keeping it nice without thinning the few hairs she has.
I also would rec the solo comb (I think there are also some knock offs of it) as the easiest/fastest way to trim the hair and still get a good look. I've had mine for at least a few years and haven't even had to replace the blades on it. You may have trouble if you try to cut too many hairs at once though.
But if you don't want to spend the money you can also do a good job with a comb and pair of scissors (but it's not as simple or quick).
Just hold a few of the longest hairs and back brush the rest (just like you would when pulling) but instead of pulling the hairs out, use scissors to trim them the length you'd like. Make sure you hold the scissors at an angle instead of straight across for a more natural look. Then brush the mane smooth and keep repeating until the mane is as short as you want it. With practice, you should be able to get a mane that's even without looking blunt, choppy, or unnatural.
I hope I explained that well, It's easier to show. And easier to do than it might sound ^_^;
Or you could just trim it using either a straight razor or sharp pocket knife by pulling the hair away from the horse's neck a little bit at a time (I've found that the smaller the pieces you cut, the better it'll look, but it takes more patience and time) and cutting it at the desired length. Be very careful though: I've never gotten my horse this way but have nicked my fingers a couple times.
Hope that helps. Good luck finding a method that'll work well for you and your horse ^_^
agree, I'm on my 2nd solo comb, but only because the first one was subjected to being used on 4-5 horses every month or two, and most of the time pasture dirty :) I use a touch of oil and a old tooth brush to get the grit off of my current one and it's lasted in regular use on 1-2 horses for .... 8 years? not bad :D
