This fic is set during Shards of Honour. It follows Simon Illyan’s career, showing the war, its attendant politics and the ascension of Aral Vorkosigan from Illyan’s perspective.
Illyan is a fairly interesting character; much too human to be the ultimate spy, but much too bland to be easy to categorise outside of his job. Philomytha carefully and effectively develops Simon’s perspective on the world through the normal course of his duties, moral dilemmas and a growing, compromising fondness for his charge. The same story looks very different through his eyes than Cordelia's.
This fic is probably comprehensible and enjoyable for those who haven't read Shards of Honour, like adventure and political intrigue, and don't mind and skimpy set-up and a lot of spoilers. Please do heed the warnings, though.
