Title: Fanfare, Fan Fiction, and the Fourth Wall
Fandom: Boston Legal
Pairing: gen, but there are so many references to slash and het and femslash it kind of feels weird to label it that way. Also, it's absurdly hard to not think Alan Shore/Denny Crane by default just by virtue of they're both in it.
Categories: humour, meta, Denny Crane!
Length: medium, 3,543 words
Warnings: Denny Crane!

Summary: Alan defends a fan fiction writer sued for copyright infringement, and Denny learns about slash.

Review: Denny's eyebrows shot up to his hair line. "Those sleepovers are purely platonic. There is no... slashing. Hey, do these characters know they're being slashed?"
"They're fictional characters, Denny," said Alan. "They don't know anything."
"They might suspect."

A highly amusing Yuletide entry from several years back. So meta and packed full of cross-fandom references it almost hurts. There are probably more references than I even caught. While I am not too sure about the legal-speak, the quickfire dialogue is so in-character I can hear James Spader and William Shatner reading the lines. Fourth wall is in pieces by the end.

"This kind of thing really only happens on television," Denny agreed.
