Review:
Waking Dream is set before the Star Wars film canon. It begins in a very classic generic mission-turned-catastrophe with the quick pace of an action/adventure narrative, but soon becomes more focussed on drama.
I can’t comment much on the plot without spoilers. This is unfortunate, because I quite like the plot. It is interesting and character-focused. (Anyone who isn’t familiar with Star Wars will be very lost reading this fic.)
The pacing of Waking Dream is well-judged. It circles slowly and speeds up at times that seem initially seem counter-intuitive, but reflects the main characters experiences. flamethrower is not reluctant to explore and extrapolate about the Jedi lifestyle and minor characters. Appropriate details are woven into the narrative and while they don't distract from the main plot, it is clear that minor characters often have their own concerns. I very much like the sense of the Jedi as a community beyond the very close-knit working partnerships that Star Wars excels with.
Waking Dream has multiple sequels. This fic is just about suitable for immature audiences. The sequels aren’t. They have graphic sex, torture and all the disturbing things that happen in Star Wars. (However I assure anyone bothered by romantic relationships with power imbalance that the romantic elements between Obi Wan and Qui Gon are far less disturbing than one might reasonably expect.)
