"Damn it!"
Peter slammed his hand against the stark white hospital wall, no longer able to keep his frustration inside. A passing nurse gave him a warning glare so he put up his hands in apology and backed away, forcing his feet to return to the waiting room he'd left Neal and Elizabeth in so he could pace off his excess energy and anger.
He'd been right. The killer had planned on a second target. Only that second target wasn't Neal. If he'd only stopped and rewound the tape a few seconds he would have seen Mozzie on it, he would have known there were two people in need of saving, not just one.
Peter closed his eyes against the visual of the raw anguish on Neal's face when he'd seen Mozzie flatline in the ER. He'd sworn when he saw that look on Neal's face the first time he'd do what it took to get him justice for his loss. And instead, he'd not found justice, he'd just gotten another one of Neal's loved ones killed.
Still, they shocked him back and whisked him off to surgery so there was a chance left, a tiny one, and Elizabeth was repeating that over and over to Neal as he sat with his head in his hands, bemoaning dragging Mozzie into his world. Only it wasn't Neal's fault. It was Peter's. He could have prevented all of this.
Steeling himself, he opened the door only to see a doctor standing with Neal's tear-stained face looking up at him as Elizabeth hugged him close.
"No..." The word was more breath and plea than sound.
And then Neal's gaze turned to Peter and a brightness behind the watery eyes shined through.
"He's going to make it," Neal choked out. "Mozzie's going to live."
