At 1.30am on Tuesday Jamie and I were at the Perth airport eagerly awaiting Nathan’s return from his holiday in Bali.
We brought a midnight snack to replenish ourselves for the long wait and went outside to eat.
While sitting outside I noticed a man leaving the Arrivals lounge carrying a single red rose, he walked over to the car park and disappeared out of sight. We went inside and waited anxiously at the front of the arrivals lounge so Jamie could take a photo as Nath walked through the door.
I noticed the man with the rose walk back inside without his rose. He meandered past the waiting crowds from one end of the huge lounge to the other. Then he went outside again and returned 30 minutes later.
I watched him and thought what is he doing? Where is his rose? I decided he was a secret agent and the rose had been a sign so his spy counterpart would recognize him. Instead of waiting in the airport the counterpart must have been in the carpark where they had hurriedly exchanged messages. I wonder if he quoted Robert Frost. One would say, ‘the woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have promises to keep’.
Charlie, (my spy) would reply and say ‘and miles to go before I sleep.’ Hmm that’s not bad, someone in Hollywood should make a spy movie.
After an hour or so I felt that Charlie wasn’t really spy material and decided he was waiting for a secret Internet love, and the the rose was their signal. That seemed more likely although I couldn’t work out why he had disposed of his rose. Unless she wasn’t alone as expected. Or perhaps Charlie had recently separated from his wife and he had persuaded her to return. On the way to the airport the taxi she was travelling in had been involved in a slight car accident and she had missed her flight and was unable to let him know, Poor Charlie imagine how dejected he must have felt until he arrived home and switched on his message bank and heard her message.
