Perhaps Charlie gave the rose to some woman he met in the carpark. As she didn't really fancy him and wouldn't give back the rose, Charlie went back to wait for his secret blind internet date in the airport. This newly arrived woman was completely unimpressed by a man who would greet her after such a long journey without even a rose in his hand.

What I don't understand is why you didn't just follow him home and find out?
