Links and things

A longer downloadable X-Files trailer has been posted over at xfiles. I've watched it once, but it's so fast and so choppy that I didn't get much out of it. Really I'm waiting for someone to write the detailed analysis so that I know what to look for before I watch it again. leucocrystal? Anyone?

I think that Barbara Castle would probably lend herself to more fic-worthy scenarios

I first read that as Barbara Cartland!

Glad you're home safe!

Just wondered whether you'd picked up this article in your fandom sweeps, I read it and thought you might find it intersting, or at least amusing, or very sad. But some emotion anyway!

Yeah, there's been quite a lot of discussion about that post going around fandom over the past few days. I found it rather infuriating, to be honest. What do you think about it?

Silly?

"Silly" is certainly another word that comes to mind. It's a bit more than silly, though, because it also has serious implications. It makes me worry that people will dismiss other discussions of gender issues in Joss Whedon's shows, simply because this one is so out-there.

Interesting. I guess it is true that people aren't interested in writing about people of colour, because if you think about it the world is not exactly short of interesting heads of state who have been people of colour. Maybe it's just that they're not as unusual as female politicians?

I'd like to hope that it's because some writers may be more interested in exploring the dynamics of what it means to be a female politician? I was pondering the idea of a 'person of colour', because I couldn't entirely tell if it meant that the person in question had to be...well, a minority in their country. I suppose it doesn't, which means that I'm well within my rights to demand fic about former Japanese PM Junichiro Koizumi. *points to icon*

(Though I'm hoping that someone will write fic about President David Palmer from 24. I'd like to see more fic about him.)

That's very true. Certainly that's what I think my own motives are, given that I'm a white woman, and I suspect that most of the participants will fall into the same category.

Point. There would definitely be a difference between writing about Koizumi and, say, Alberto Fujimori. On the other hand, even being a politician in a majority non-white country would still have certain consequences in terms of international politics. As there are definitely racial power relations at an international level as well.

...now I want fic about Harold Wilson and Rhodesia's Ian Smith. That would be a fascinating if amazingly controversial topic to explore, especially if Mugabe was brought into it.

Someone could, of course, claim Mugabe for majoritython. God, that would take guts. Possibly it would even go against the principles of the challenge...

I really hope majoritython works out well. I see someone has suggested Andrea Wyatt from The West Wing, to which I say, yes, please. Interesting that no one has suggested Nancy McNally - she's the only fictional person I can think of who's black, female and in a position of political power.

Huh. I can't think of anyone offhand.

*thinks harder*

Nope. Dear me. I've written one or two myself, but I don't think I count!
