Links and things

A longer downloadable X-Files trailer has been posted over at xfiles. I've watched it once, but it's so fast and so choppy that I didn't get much out of it. Really I'm waiting for someone to write the detailed analysis so that I know what to look for before I watch it again. leucocrystal? Anyone?

Glad you're home safe!

Just wondered whether you'd picked up this article in your fandom sweeps, I read it and thought you might find it intersting, or at least amusing, or very sad. But some emotion anyway!

Yeah, there's been quite a lot of discussion about that post going around fandom over the past few days. I found it rather infuriating, to be honest. What do you think about it?

Silly?

"Silly" is certainly another word that comes to mind. It's a bit more than silly, though, because it also has serious implications. It makes me worry that people will dismiss other discussions of gender issues in Joss Whedon's shows, simply because this one is so out-there.

*waves* Just swinging by, but in the event that you didn't catch it _allecto_'s post was discussed at deadbrowalking, and there were a few comments I thought might be of interest to you. I'm always into critical analysis of gender and race re: Whedon's oeuvre, and I think _allecto_ was an easy target for fandom, given that (as fire_fly comments on the deadbro post) a lot of fans who responded don't seem to understand what rape culture actually is.

fire_fly critiques Zoe's characterization and how it ties into Whedon's shows in general:

In the show more generally she's shown to consistently have better judgement than Mal and yet he's the leader -- there seems to be no good reason for this other than comedy and racism+sexism. Mal deals with her by disrespecting her judgement -- he questions her capacity to do her job when she and Wash are having issues, he ignores her advice on numerous occasions, and basically treats her like his right arm rather than an autonomous human being. I actually can't recall any time when he asked for her ( ... )

Hi there! Thank you for the links, I'll check them out. I definitely don't think that Whedon is blameless when it comes to the treatment of women, but I don't think that _allecto_ did any favors for the cause in the way that she pointed them out, basically.

Yeah, I don't think she did, either. I suppose it's up to the rest of us to do it better. Business as usual!
