Remember December Comics

Trying to get into the writing mood so looking back at what I read last month seems like a good place to start. I love reading! :)

Week of December 2:
Fave - (Marvel) X-Force Annual #1 - This issue was the benefactor of a fairly average week. I actually didn't care for the first story starring Wolverine and didn't like the art of it. The co-story/backup starring Deadpool was fantastic, and reminded me why I enjoy the character.
Best Other - Empowered One-Shot - A fun, light series that is in black & white and full of action and craziness. Feels different to read it in such a short story, used to the large graphic novels it usually comes in. A pleasant surprise.
Bad Marvel - Nova #32 - I don't know what's happened to this title but it used to be one I looked forward to every month, and ever since War of Kings started awhile back it hasn't been the same. The art has also been on and off, which hasn't helped. It's hard for me to care when there's crappy art.
Bad DC - JSA All-Stars #1 - I was one who though the JSA had grown too big. Unfortunately, I don't like the approach that's been taken with the "All Star" side of the group, I'm not fond of the art (draw pupils damn it!) and I really don't care for Magog. Strike 1, Strike 2, Strike 3 ... You're Out!

Week of December 9:
Fave - (DC) Adventure Comics #5 - I didn't even notice that the majority of the book wasn't drawn by Manapul (only the Superboy backup) and I didn't care because seeing a return to Superboy-Prime and trying to fight against Black Lantern Alexander Luthor. AWESOME.
Best Marvel - New Avengers Annual #3 - This seemed like a really strange story, for Clint to have gone off on his own and be captured, but I did love the women getting a chance to shine. Of course, did another hideout have to be destroyed? Also this title was just another example of Marvel's bad decision to add another issue to the already slow going Captain America: Reborn.
Bad DC - Batgirl #5 - Just last month, the previous issue was one of my faves of the week. And just as quickly, the issue focuses on the things I hate, trying to force things (Jim setting up Babs and a detective of his) and just bad characterization (Dick blowing his top on Steph & Babs). Not to mention having Steph get shot!! This is like when Dick was Nightwing and he couldn't go a few issues without being shot.
Bad Marvel - S.W.O.R.D. #2 - I want to like this book. I adored Agent Brand in Whedon's Astonishing X-men, I'd like to read something with Beast in it, even Lockheed. But the art is terrible, and I can't stand Gyrich.

Week of December 16:
Fave - (Marvel) X-Factor #200 - For a 'milestone' issue, this really felt like just the beginning of a big story for the characters. It was interesting to see Madrox and Co. interact with the Fantastic Four (Guido's fight with the Thing), I'm excited for the title something I haven't been able to say since the bad Baby dupe absorption story.
Best DC - Green Lantern Corps #43 - The art is great, the story was phenomenal as it has been since the start of the series. This might be the one 'family' book that is every bit as good as the main title. I liked how Kyle was brought back with the help of Star Sapphire Miri tying him together with Soranik. And Red Lantern Guy is INSANE.
Bad Marvel - X-Force #22 - I have no interest in this Necrosha storyline. Some of these 'dead' characters that are alive again I have no idea who they are and it really throws me off.
Bad DC - Supergirl #48 - Just a weird issue. They've struggled to really develop the Lana/Kara relationship, especially with Kara being on New Krypton reuniting with her family there.

Week of December 23:
Fave - (Other) Buffy the Vampire Slayer Willow One-Shot - The Buffy series has been one that I've jumped on and off several times since it went into comic form and this was an issue that really reeled me in with it centering around Willow. Also I enjoyed the peek at Tara.
Best DC - Teen Titans #78 - This book has been rocky at best since Geoff Johns left it what 4 years ago? This was the best issue in awhile, taking my favorite Titan at the moment (Ravager) and focusing on her family (Jericho, Slade). Great stuff.
Bad Marvel - Uncanny X-Men #519 - Beast decides to leave and it's done so quickly without a big discussion with Scott? FAIL.
Bad DC - Blackest Night JSA #1 - Might have been a series that could have avoided the Blackest Night tie-ins, had no real interest in the story one bit.

Week of December 30 (No Comics Week):
Fave - (DC) Blackest Night #6 - The only book for the week, as most shops that agreed to DC's terms got this the week before to release on the 30th. This was a great issue, and for a series that is going 8 issues (including a skip month with no issue) for me who doesn't like long events AT ALL, this was what was needed to reinvigorate my interest in the event especially with the deputizing of lanterns and who the rings chose to wield them. I'm very excited for 7 & 8 and what is in store for DC in 2010. Can't wait!
