Based on the 2004 film comedy of the same title, the new Off-Broadway musical "Saved" looks at a popular girl at a Christian high school who experiences visions of Jesus after her boyfriend admits that he is gay. We spoke with co-star Julia Murney, who recently left the Broadway cast of "Wicked."
What's your role like? I am the Mary-Louise Parker character from the film. I play the mom of what is the equivalent of Jena Malone, here played by Celia Keenan-Bolger. This is the 180 of "Wicked," where I was onstage essentially the entire time. Here, I pretty much sing a lullaby. But what I get to do is really fun and the cast is marvelous.
Is this a religious show? No, it's not a show about religion. I would say it's a show about faith. About questioning faith. The writers didn't take what I think would have been the easy road. They could have made it a show about rabid, psychobabble people. It's really about a girl going through a crisis of faith and how the people around her hold on to or lose their faith.
How would you describe the songs? It's an amalgam of styles. A little pop rock, a little musical theater. There's no giant singing in the "American Idol" tradition. This is storytelling singing.
What other projects are you now working on? I'm doing "Evita" at Sacramento Music Circus, which is this huge place I've never been before. And it's time for me to do another solo show at Birdland or Joe's Pub in the fall. That takes a whole other brain power I don't have right now.
