All in all, 2009 was a good year for me. Seems like I was one of the very few since everyone else said it was a bad year for them. Still, I think it's time for an end of year meme. Which of course, I'll complete late so there goes my resolution to procrastinate no more!

01. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
I sneaked into someone’s room on campus to spend the night and almost got caught in the process!

02. Did you keep your new years' resolutions? Will you make more for next year?
I made very few resolutions last year. The first one was to finally ask a certain person out. Ended up writing several pro and con lists, going back and forth but in the end, failed to do so. The second one was to be more organized and I must say it worked out really well! Who knew I’d have colour-coded post-it notes and a somewhat weird filing system at the end of it?
My new year’s resolutions for 2010 are simply: to stop procrastinating; to be less afraid of what might happen and most importantly, to live up to what I believe in (or at least try my best to do so).

03. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes! My French teacher Corinne got married to my classmate Fahad (both of them adults, not to worry!) and they had a beautiful baby boy in July. It was one of the very rare occasions that I was actually happy two people were getting married; usually my instinctive reaction is along the lines of: “No! Don’t doom yourselves to a life of misery!” But for once I was thrilled two people were getting married and I’m glad it worked out for them.

04. Did anyone close to you die?
No. Fortunately.

05. What countries did you visit?
China! Well, not strictly China, went on holiday to Hong Kong with my family and had loads of fun!

06. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Time management skills.

07. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Quite a few! The last week of January, the first weeks of June and July and the end of the year for various reasons. Big long post coming up soon on this subject.

08. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Having more confidence in myself. And that's not saying much because I still have a long way to go in that department.

09. What was your biggest failure?
Not being able to get over a certain person.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
A cold/fever thing which I like to pretend was really swine flu and boast about having antibodies against.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
A little blue ceramic dragon on my desk. I like to think of it as my very own version of Merlin’s Great Dragon who talks to me and is slightly evil.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Merlin fandom! Despite the whole racism debacle still think it’s great to be in a fandom with so little wank and drama. Makes a huge change from HP fandom, let me tell you. Although sometimes I miss the crazy stuff of HP.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
My own. I feel failed to stand up for what I believed in at crucial moments.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Food, so much food. And books. Don’t know why I spent money buying books when have 3 different library memberships.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Virology. I love it, love all of it! Am thrilled I’m studying it.

16. What songs will always remind you of 2009?
Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” I loved that song until I managed to figure out the lyrics and as subsequently horrified. Me and my friends continued shamelessly to love that song.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: happier or sadder? thinner or fatter? richer or poorer?
Definitely happier. Much, much happier.
And slightly heavier! (aargh, terrifying slide into obesity! why? why?)

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Being more assertive. Not being so scared.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastinating.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Saying goodbye to my best friend as she left town. Don’t know when I’ll see her again.

21. How will you be spending New Years?
Can I still answer this question almost a week later?

22. Did you fall in love in 2009?
No but I did fall in lust with a number of people.

23. How many one-night stands?
None. Must rectify this situation in 2010.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Gossip Girl. Merlin. 90210. I love my tv shows.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No, just the opposite, I’m more inclined to forgive and forget.

26. What was the best book you read?
The Wealth and Poverty of Nations by David S. Landes - brilliant book, entertaining and informative.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Les Plastiscines. I was obsessed with them for a while.

28. What did you want and get?
Well, I’m going to be admittedly biased and say Sarah’s The Demon’s Lexicon I always knew she was amazingly talented and could write fabulous stuff. I’m so happy her book is finally out.

29. What did you want and not get?
An acknowledgment of my feelings for a certain person.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Proposal. Because I went to that film with my best friend who I now miss terribly.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Nothing! I didn’t do anything because I had an exam the next day! Aaargh! Am going to make up for that this year.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Emotional validation from a certain person. This is tiresome isn't it?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Ugh, in a completely misguided effort to get in touch with my feminine side, I now have a wardrobe full of pink, lace and sequins which I am never going to actually wear and feel vaguely nauseated by.

34. What kept you sane?
My friends who put up with so much crap from me.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Taylor Swift, I love her!

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Quite a few. I got very angry numerous times. I even stopped reading the newspaper for a while because I found it so depressing.

37. Who did you miss the most?
My best friend, M.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
The new me, haha!

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009.
I’m not sure really. I learned people aren’t as bad as I think they are, that they’re really just trying to live their lives, the same as me and I should really give them a chance because I’m missing out on a lot by refusing to let people in and always keeping them at a distance.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Ugh, hate quoting songs. It always seems like something angsty emo people do.

It was a very eventful year, though and I'm mostly writing this because I want to remember it long after it's gone. I feel a lot of things worked out for me and I'm very grateful.
