Today it occurred to me that Iowa is an absurd place. We have no interesting history. No wars, no revolutions, just corn. For all I know, no one in Iowa has ever done anything but grow corn. This is probably why our history is so boring.
As if to support this fact, all of my jobs have involved corn. Two summers of pollinating at BASF, and now working in the seed lab on campus. Where I got to deal with corn today. Actually we're having a sort of workshop deal, so everything that wasn't talking about corn was setting up machinery to run corn tomorrow.
I'm not complaining, mind you. Actually I really like my job. If I didn't have any sort of social connections or a need to eat or sleep, I'd probably spend pretty much all day there. There's literally no downside. Sure, I get sweaty and tired and dirty. And some of my tasks aren't much more than chores. But I get to work in a giant lab with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of machinery. And I don't have to talk to people.
Well, I have to talk to my boss. And my coworker (who is a grad student). But they're both nice. But most of my time is spent either alone, or in a place that's loud enough to discourage excess speaking. It's like the perfect job. Not like all those other jobs I applied for that involve helping people and dealing with morons and ignorami. Seriously, at least once every couple of days I feel like just strangling someone because they're so incredibly dumb. More often than not, these people are on TV. Or they're celebrities. Or both.
I guess Herbert Hoover came from Iowa. But we don't talk about that, because he sort of screwed up everything. And Iowa had the first land grant collegiate institution. And has a freaking awesome engineering university. Especially for undergrads.
Too bad we never had a civil war with U of Iowa.
