Terry Pratchett - Thud!
Good old Sam Vimes, commander of the Ank-Morpork City Watch, has yet another trouble to handle. First he has to find out for himself if a conservative dwarf community leader has been killed - and the victim's troll-hating companions are more than willing to blame their ancestral enemies. And the Koom Valley day, which both trolls and dwarves celebrate with parades as a day of glorious battle, is approaching fast.
The dwarves in question are reactionary conservatives who shun the outside world, who use "seeing the light" as a derogatory term and think that wiping a blackboard is a mortal sin because it destroys writing. (In fact, this adds a quite significant detail to the dwarf culture). Ordinary dwarfs are not sure if they should follow their dictates to be proper dwarfs or not.
At the same time, Sam Vimes has an important task to read to the infant Sam Junior. And finally learn to use the latest update of his personal imp organizer.
Although this is a Watch book, I recognize just a few police series references - aside from things like the Temptation To Kill the Suspects and the Every Investigation Leads to a Strip Joint. In fact, one of the main references is more to the Dark Side of the Force than anything else.
However, theme of the previous Watch books, which appear to be the celebration of diversity, does continue. Watch even gets its first vampire (Black Ribboner, of course). And Ankh-Morpork gets yet closer to steampunk.
There is also a theme about people who are willing even to destroy evidence as "lies" if they do not fit into their "truth".
(I wonder what WOD players think about Pratchett. I do not think the Discworld vampires and werewolves are to their tastes - not enough angst and power trips. Though GURPS Discworld specifically mentioned some possibilities…).
