So the Grey Lady and the Strawberry Snatcher crashed and burned today - kids energy levels outstripped ours and no one listened and we lost them. There was a lesson plan, yes, and we actually did go over rules. But our issue seems to be that we desperately want them to be enjoying themselves while learning something - or else why bother? it won't stick with them, if they don't like it - and they have let us know that as cool as we are, we're not that cool.
I don't know. I'm feeling defeated, and I'm used to holding their attention for more than (maybe) 2 minutes at the very beginning. A little crazy is a good thing... but our class running all over the place, turning handstands, and starting fights is not a good kind of crazy.
Let's see - we came together well at the very end, with Charles' rendition of 'I believe I can fly'. But that's him pouring his energy into it, and giving it a groove that the kids really identify with and love. Our little song that Bobby threw together didn't come close... they were both call and response, but Bobby's was a simple little melody, while Charles' had more soul.
And it doesn't seem like our lesson plan should have been so far off of what the kids were able to do - I really feel like they could have connected with the material much better (we played duck duck goose! and follow the leader!) but they were just gone.
Don't know if it's PSSA time, or just crazy-too-much-school-syndrome, but the angels we had last week decidedly weren't.
We have maybe 2 who are really interested, though. Suppose that's decent, out of a group of 16?
(engin midterm went well, and the take-home is amusing me greatly - maybe I'll tell you what it's about after I turn it in ;) I should really go write 15 pages of history, now. *sigh*)
