This was easily my favorite episode of Season 3 so far. The boys finally got back to saving people, hunting things.
First of all, excellent use of Gordon. He was creepy and malevolent while staying true to his own crazy principles. I'm also glad they got rid of scary Jesus guy. He wasn't a fun kind of crazy. I would not want him popping up in future episodes.
I was unreasonably excited when Dean promised to kill Bela. I wish he would, but it looks like she'll get off now because she took five minutes to play with a ouija board. As usual, she was only there as a deus-ex-machina crutch for the writers so they didn't have to think of a better way for Gordon to track down the boys. I thought that the whole reason they got rid of Ash and the Roadhouse was because it made things like that too easy. And now they just have that dumb girl to fulfill the same role...just without an interesting character. I miss Ash. He wouldn't have wasted a whole episode by trying to tempt Dean into having angry sex when there was an actual monster to find and destroy.
...And maybe I wouldn't have minded if he had. That would have been an interesting plot twist.
Anyway, back to the things I loved.
I love that Dean and Sam have finally resolved their argument. Now we don't have to open/close every episode with Sam being angry at his brother's emotional constipation. (FYI, Sam...If you know Dean better than anyone - which I don't doubt - you really shouldn't have been quite so surprised at how he's dealing with his impending death.)
That scene at the end where Dean gave Sam to the Impala (no, it wasn't the other way around) was just adorable. Oh, Boys! It was just like a scene from, like, any tragic love triangle ever, I guess. When the dying member takes the other two people's hands and puts them together while everyone looks teary yet hopeful for the future. ...I think they even do that at the end of Disney's Hunchback...except that Quasi's not dying. And now I feel silly for comparing Dean to Quasimodo...though I'm sure the Impala makes a great Esmerelda.
As usual, the show did a great job of blurring the good/evil lines. Like I mentioned above: Gordon's a nasty S.O.B. but he does have a code of honor. He doesn't even make exceptions for himself. He really was going to kill himself, and he really thought Sam should have done the same.
The big difference, since the last time the boys saw Gordon, is that Sam is not that innocent anymore. There isn't that much contrast between the two of them. Now, they're both kind of willing to commit little acts of evil for the greater good. Although, Sam's idea of the greater good now seems to be whatever's good for Dean, rather than what's good for humanity as a whole.
It might be wrong of me, but I think morally ambiguous Sam is hotter than good Sam. I'm really enjoying our tiny glimpses of scary. J.P.'s acting it wonderfully.
What did Sam use to kill Gordon? Some kind of wire? I couldn't really tell. How could it be that the wire could sever Gordon's spine but not cut Sam's hands even a little bit. Because, if it had, Sam'd be a vampire now...he was covered in Gordon's blood.
Whatever spirit Bela talked to on her little ouija board, that was a pretty kick ass message. Not a lot of room for misunderstanding, just Get the Hell out of there! I wonder who it was that's so invested in the boys' well being. I doubt they'll ever tell us...or mention it again, for that matter.
I'll just end with a little excerpt of the conversation I had with my sister following the show. Sometimes we wonder about weird things.
Sister: where do they keep their beer cooler in the Impala? back seat? the trunk's full of weapons
Me: hmmm...must be. I guess you always want your beer cooler easily accessible while you're driving
Sister: of course, especially when you're on the run
Me: ...right, because - if you happen to get pulled over for speeding, or having your brake lights out - you really want to give the police a reason to detain you just a little longer
Sister: yup
Me:: oh, boys. it's a wonder they lived this long...
Me: ...er...i guess they didn't, exactly, live this long
