I'm so glad you said this, because actually I'm not sure it *is* well understood. I know that a lot of corset-makers have found it out through experience. Fabrics stretch; they become more supple as they're warmed by the body wearing them, at least to an extent; they may distort (look at rump-sprung skirts and rump- and knee-sprung jeans.)
Yet, there are sewists who don't "get" that even woven fabrics have a degree of elasticity, even when it's undesirable, and that even the non-knit or non-stretch fabrics aren't absolutely "static."
My experience is doubtless an insufficient data base, but I'm always dismayed at many people's expectations, e.g., a single layer of interfacing, because it's used to add body to a part of a garment and/or add a crisp edge, can be used in place of more expensive *boning* and will give as good a result---and then they're angry and disappointed of course when that doesn't work, "....[because] it's INTERFACING!" Right; so what?
