Modern Children's Lit 101

Mar 22, 2004 09:55

I just re-read My Bunny Diary to make me feel better about a situation that had been bumming me out. It worked. Now I want a scooter, to pretend it's a wild horse.

Some of you are new moms and dads, and some of you are curious about the world of modern children's literature. So before I wrap up these books I got for my nephews, I'll give you the info on them.

  • My Bunny Diary by Dora Cottontail, AKA Tracy Dockray.
  • The Son of the Sun and the Daughter of the Moon by Holly Young Huth
  • Sara Nohair by Gillian Johnson (I think all typographers should read this book.)
  • Mouse Tail Moon by Joanne Ryder

Other favorite kid's books, besides the standard Mother Goose, Alice In Wonderland, A.A. Milne, Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, and Leo Leoni:

  • Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
  • The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig
  • Rootabaga Stories
  • Wacky Wednesday
  • The Babar series
  • The Madeline series, by Ludwig Bemelmans
  • The Amelia Bedelia series, by Peggy Parish
  • The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf
  • The Bear That Wasn't by Frank Tashlin
  • Mandatory reading for New England kids: Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey
  • Finally, please don't raise a kid without reading them The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. As a companion book to Mother Goose and all the others, it can't be beat.

For more good recomendations, watch any episode of the PBS series "Reading Rainbow".
