Last month I went to Omaha to catch Coldplay. I have often heard the comparisons of live Coldplay and live U2, so I was anxious to check them out. Little did I know when I bought the tickets that Snow Patrol would be opening for them. Making it a near perfect day.
Loriann and I traveled to Omaha following Beth and Rachel. The plan was to catch a bite to eat before catching Snow Patrol (Gary and Nathan, really) at a local record store. After we finished eating we noticed a line starting to form, so we joined. As it turned out, we were able to sneak in the VIP section before it actually got closed off to the public.
We waited for a little over a hour before Gary and Nathan took their places. Gary was his usual talkative self and mentioned Omaha a few times. They played a few new songs as well as some old classics. Of course, the favorite was "Chasing Cars" by far. My personal favorite has always been "Chocolate" though. Always has, always will.
After the short set, Gary and Nathan signed some autographs. We grabbed some Omaha in-store posters to have the boys sign and waited in line. When it was my turn I had a couple of questions that I was supposed to ask Gary, but all that came out was "Hello..." He replied with, "Hi how are ya?" I said, "great....How are YOU?" He got a huge smile and told me he was well. I said hello to Nathan and then asked for a picture. I was stuck in the land of giants by being between those two!
When we were done, Loriann and I said our goodbyes to Beth and Rachel. They really only drove down to catch the free Snow Patrol show. I don't blame them, I would have done the same thing if I didn't have Coldplay tickets!
Loriann and I walked around the shops in the area for a bit before heading back into the record store to do some actual record shopping. We waited until it seemed the boys were done signing before going back inside. However, once we walked in we realized Gary was still looking around at records. I figured this was my chance to ask him what I was supposed to ask eariler so I walked up to him.
Me: "Gary?"
Gary: "Yeah? Hi!"
Me: "Hello. Eariler I was supposed to ask you, for my friends and I, if you are coming back to the states for your own tour..."
Gary: "Yeah...we're doing some dates in the fall."
Me: "Besides the U2 shows?"
Gary: "Around the U2 shows yeah. Where are you from?"
Me: "Iowa..."
Gary: "I don't think we're playing Iowa...."
Me: "That's okay...I'm going to Chicago and Boston to see the shows."
Gary: "Great!"
Me: "Yeah......well, thanks for your time. See you later."
Gary: "Yeah, see ya..."
My friend and I shopped around a bit more and then left to report on the most recent conversation. I was pleased I was finally able to ask Gary what I was supposed to earlier. And I was really excited to hear that they'd be coming back this fall for their own shows as well!
Loriann and I found some good food to eat before heading over to the Qwest Center for the concert. Once it opened we found our nice seats and waited for the show to start.
The Howling Bells were the first opening band. I wasn't too impressed with them. But then again, when am I ever impressed with a girl singer?
Snow Patrol did their opening spot to perfection. Just like before, they played a couple of new songs and stuck to a majority of the hits. The crowd seemed to be in to it and even joined in singing along with a couple of the songs. For me it was great to see one of my favorite bands again, not too far from where I live.
Coldplay took the stage for the main event. Right away I was stuck with Chris Martin's stage presence. He commands the stage very well and uses that to his advantage. He's really all over the stage getting every single person in the crowd into the show. One of my highlights was "Yellow" I've loved that song since it came out and I loved finally hearing it live. The other hightlight was watching them play IN the crowd. Not on some b-stage, they were actually IN the crowd. They played in a row along the other side of the arena. I don't think I've ever seen that before. Yes, I've seen singers/guitar playes go in the crowd, but not the whole band to do a set out there! Amazing! "Viva la Vida" was fantastic live. Pure energy from the crowd and the band. Plus, "Fix You" had a great energy to it.
Coldplay are definitely an amazing band to see live. This was my first Coldplay show and it definitely won't be my last! I truely enjoyed it. Plus, with Snow Patrol and the nice live CD Coldplay gave each fan at the end of the night, it made for one great day! A day I would like to do again for sure.
