Last night I made my first attempt at chocolate caramel shortbread, otherwise known as Millionaires Slice. I'd consulted some recipes but none of them looked quite right, so I was baking by ear and making adjustments as I went along. It came out all right, but not what I was hoping for. Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck has just come out with a new product: Canned latte, in a can that heats itself when you push a button on the bottom.

According to the New York Times article (registration or Bug Me Not required), pushing the button allows water to mix with quicklime, causing an exothermic reaction that heats the can and its contents ( Read more... )

I just fixed dinner for six people -- my cousin Sophie and her husband Ross, and my uncle Frank (Sophie's dad), his wife and two youngest kids, who were up visiting.
