My dad's married. Whoa. The wedding and ancillary events were incredibly surreal -- mostly good, but plenty else to be bemused and/or catty about. I'll get into some of the details when I don't have to get up in a few hours to catch a plane.

It was my mother who first got me in the habit of reading the obituaries and death notices in the newspaper. She grew up in the country, where you'd read the obits in the local paper to find out what was going on around you, and attending viewings and funerals were a major opportunity to visit and hear the news. Honey's gone. The decision was pretty much automatic when I heard that she had continued to decline overnight, and I suspect that even if we'd done nothing she probably would have died naturally today or tomorrow. But there was no reason to let her hang on that long, and it was a cruelty when she was feeling so ill.

The vet just called with the morning update. She's not responding well, she's still vomiting despite all the meds they've been pumping into her, and the vet thought she's already weaker than when she presented there yesterday afternoon. I'm on my way over now.

Honey's in the ICU at the emergency vet tonight, on IV antibiotics, fluids, and other helper-outers. Her kidneys have pretty much shut down. We hope she'll respond, and there is a chance she will, but her vet has warned us not to be too optimistic for a good outcome ( Read more... )

Last night I moved the polar fleece blanket over to the other side of the futon so I could sit on the last spot not covered with a thick fuzz of spring-shedding cat hair. Today, the cat has spent all afternoon curled up on the bare spot. She is nothing if not thorough in her methods.
