Near is a relative thing. Last night, we did hear an emergency broadcast for a mandatory evacuation targeting a community several miles southeast of here: one of the areas hit by the wildfires in 2003. Where we're living now is in the middle of a pretty large town, Temecula, just north of San Diego county. We can't even smell the smoke here, which I could in 2003 when one of the fires was on Camp Pendleton, which borders Fallbrook, where I was living at the time. Basically: I'm further from trouble now than I was then, because I hear the fire has just jumped the 15 freeway and is now actually threatening the outlying areas of Fallbrook. That's the one I am keeping an eye on, as you can well imagine. But if it comes to any kind of evacuation, (my family's homes are on the west side of town), my mom is there and will get my grandparents out. But again, it would take a lot for things to get to that point.
Also, I just found out that the kids are home from school because the schools down south are closed today due to the wildfires. Alex e-mailed me. It's kind of scary, but the fire is not anywhere near them, either. Thank God.
It seems most of the news stories running here and on the web are focused on the Los Angeles fires, all of which are even further away from us than the San Diego fires. I guess this is because I technically live in Riverside county now, so I get the L.A. news rather than the San Diego news, even though I'm geographically closer to San Diego. It's kind of frustrating, to be honest. If it weren't for the miracle of the Internets, I wouldn't even know as much as I do. But the fire would have to burn miles and miles to get to me and Jimmy here, so don't worry about us.
