She didn't want to think that way. After all...
...no, no, no. She'd told Sniper that she would be here. And she wanted to be here, to have fun, to be happy. It was plain silly to think of a birthday party as a reminder of all the bad things that had happened in the past two years. There were plenty of those... but there was plenty good, too. Like Sniper, for instance. And Cloud. And lots of other people that were still around, right? Right... doing her best to keep that in mind, Krile slid off the table and went to go find someone to talk to.

He had Bridge's journal with him, the much-loved and worn leather cover in his hands something of a comfort as he played the waiting game, dreading that his best friend would never come back but at the same time, knowing that he had to hope or else he'd drive himself insane.
Spotting Krile, he somewhat-hesitantly moved toward her; she didn't seem to be in much of a partying mood either.

She managed a smile when he started in her direction, glad to see him anyhow, and hugged him on a sudden impulse. He looked like he could use one.
"Hey there, mister. Want to get something to eat?"

"Of course," he said, letting go, then indicated the journal. "...I found it in the elevator. It's still working. I'm not giving up on him yet."

She pushed her hands into her pockets and put a hand on his elbow for a moment for him to join her as she started to meander towards the food tables. "Besides, he's got Logan with him. He'll take care of both of them."
Reply
"And maybe he can rest a little bit, too. He's been working far too hard lately... and doesn't sleep enough." Trying to push the conversation onto other objects, he went on, "So. You've been here for two years, huh? I can hardly believe it's been that long."

She was happy to accept the subject change, though. "Yep! I'm a real old lady now; I'm surprised I don't have any grey hair." She twiddled her bangs. "I sure can't say it hasn't been an interesting time."
Reply
"I've still got a few months on you, young one," he teased gently. "In terms of Sphere time, that means I'm probably considered years older than you. But two years is still quite a long time, yeah..." He then blew out a sigh. "It's never a dull moment here, no. Two years means a lot has happened... but it's not all bad. Lots of tragedies, yes... but some great and lasting friendships, too."
Reply
"Even if we've both lost a lot of people... I'm still happy I've been able to meet everyone I have. It's strange to be older without having grown, but I still wouldn't undo my time here if I had a choice."
Reply
"As long as I can use it as a weapon, I wouldn't mind that."
He then fell silent, staring out over the rest of the party guests, reflecting back on everyone he'd known here- positively and negatively.
"I wouldn't, either," he finally agreed. "I feel like being here has made me- better. My friendships and my relationships have both done that. I miss Inara so much it hurts, but at the same time, I'm glad I had the chance to meet her, fall head-over-heels in love with her and be happy with her. If I never had, or if I was still where I came from... who knows how I would be? How either of us would be? We may have gone in entirely different directions than the way we've gone here. Maybe for the worse."

"Hey, Krile," he said. "Are you sure you wanna be here? I won't mind if you want to leave, promise."
She had told him that she wanted to be here, but he wasn't going to force it. This had started out as a birthday party, but in the end, it was just a place for people to be with their friends. The last thing he wanted was for Krile to feel forced into coming to something like this.

And a party was a good place to start doing that. "Besides, it looks like you really pulled out the stops for this. How long did it take you to set it all up, anyway?"

Or at least a time not spent miserable. Sniper knew firsthand how hard it was to smile after someone disappeared, let alone trying to feel even the slightest bit happy. Of course, Krile just smiled, but she was something of a special case. He hoped that she gave herself some time to grieve. So many people here just kept on going with their lives without so much as shedding a tear, which was something Sniper found somewhat unsettling.
He tapped his chin. "Aaah... I spent most of the morning on it. New people have been coming, so it had to catch their eye, I figured."

But she also wanted to put worries aside for now. It was okay to do that, right? And it really would be a shame to waste all of Sniper's time and effort by being gloomy. "How about you tell me the story of your latest adventures in the Scavenger's Yard?" she said, giving him a light poke.

Sniper brightened. When it came to bullshit at least, he knew he reigned supreme. The thing about his stories was that they were unbelievable, just like all good stories were supposed to be. What was the point in a believable story? Even when you were just making excuses, the trick was to think of something so utterly fantastic that whoever was chasing after you forgot what he wanted to throttle you for ( ... )
