SINGING ACTION TIMES ofsong November 19 2009, 15:53:21 UTC
As soon as the karaoke machine was fixed, Goodbye was in there practicing. To tell the truth, she wasn't fond of a lot of the songs on it. A lot of them felt like they had the right music to her, but entirely the wrong lyrics. And the whole idea of singing someone else's lyrics felt wrong to her. But it wasn't as wrong as not singing at all, so she made do.

And "made do" meant that she practiced, and she practiced hard. For the past two days, she'd only let up her thorough investigation of the karaoke machine, what it contained, and how she could twist that to suit her voice long enough to eat and sleep, and sometimes she'd had to be prompted. Other times, she'd actually stumbled and almost collapsed on the stage.

No mistaking it: in her past life, she'd been a diva. But she'd been a genuinely hard-working one...or at least, she was willing to be now. It was hard to tell where these things came from.

By the night itself, Goodbye had settled on which songs she wanted and what alterations she'd make to make them hers. She needed the ( ... )

It certainly couldn't have been any more clear to Aimo, who came scrambling over, carrying a somewhat flimsy sign that had the words

☪ GOODBYE'S DEBUT

CONGRATULATIONS ♥

slathered on triumphantly with paint. She had, in fact, found the sparkling glitter for sale. The poster-board itself had to be salvaged, but it was cheaper that way! Besides, it was well worth it just to support her idol -- or, her sister, who might as well be her idol (and friendly competition? now wasn't the time to think of that) and for some reason this setting was all too familiar, but for once in the best of ways. Like she had been near that very stage, watching spellbound and unable to help singing along. Had she really been up there before as well, exactly the way she was in the dream? Would she do it again?

But that radiant smile pushed thoughts of her future aside, and she waved as the sign, a bit oversized for her, momentarily obscured her face.

The moment he had shown up at the bar, Aurora was all business. He'd looked around, assessing the damaging for himself and calculating how long it would take to repair purely by habit. The weather had been getting colder, unfortunately, meaning that efficiency would be reduced due to being hindered by proper clothing and the drop in motivation people seemed to suffer when the weather was poor.

Perhaps the entertainment would help draw in people. Not that Aurora was paying any attention to the scantily clad woman on the stage, or the girl advertising for her. Instead he found picking up debris far more interesting, starting piles for wood that could be salvaged and reused, and materials that were far too damaged to be handy.

Aimo's excitement was only building, as she waited hopefully for more people to arrive. It was the kind of excitement that made everything melt away, no matter what troubles were there before. The kind that causes you not to see the large plank of wood right behind you.

She fell backwards with a resounding yelp, and it was likely the only way she would have noticed the quiet person taking care of damages close by. Who probably looked much better right-side-up. Flushed with embarrassment, Aimo lifted herself into a sitting position. There was something about those feminine looks that struck a chord.

"So pretty..."

She didn't quite realize that she'd said it aloud.

By the time Aimo showed up, Goodbye was already warming up with her first song. She wasn't overly fond of it, but the tune suited her well enough, and if she messed with the lyrics a bit, it would be all right. Just for now. Ultimately, the truth was this: it was better than not singing at all. As soon as she had a steadier job here, she'd go looking for more music ( ... )

He heard the impact first, turning around to see what had caused it. The girl with the sign had upset one of the areas he'd yet to get to, and he hoped she hadn't landed on anything worth salvaging; from the looks of it, they needed all the wood they could find.

It took a second for him to realize that maybe, perhaps, he should check on her health. It would be terrible publicity for someone to get injured on the job so early, especially a young girl people were prone to be sympathetic towards. As much as Aurora didn't understand the biased towards favoring younger members of society, he couldn't deny it existed.

"Yes, her pitch and rhythm are quite accurate." Aurora responded offhandedly as he walked over to the fallen girl, mistakenly thinking her compliment was directed at the singer. He wondered how correct it was as he caught the slight pause, glancing up only briefly at the stage. "Are you injured?"

The first thing to shock Aimo was that the voice clearly belonged to a man. The second, naturally, was that he had heard her. It almost occurred to her that she should correct him, but he wasn't wrong - Goodbye's singing was unspeakably beautiful (she'd seen too, she realized with a little dismay), he was a complete stranger, and he seemed the type that had his mind made up on whatever he might say. She'd go with his question instead, one that was so nice of him and caused a familiar feeling of contentment ( ... )

As Aurora glanced up, Goodbye met his gaze for a fleeting moment. It was so distracting, how familiar the stern seriousness of that lovely face was while the man himself meant nothing to her. But even if she knew little else about herself, she knew that she was a professional, and she couldn't let this interfere with her performance any more than it already had ( ... )

"'Before'? You believe you two are from the same world?" He asked, curious. Aurora was confident both women were new, and to have found people from their memories so quickly.. He couldn't help but wonder how they'd managed to figure out their connection when others who had been here far longer were struggling with theirs. Accepting the piece of debris, he looked it over, eyes carefully inspecting every crack with the intent one usually saved for solving issues greater than a burned bar.

"Yes, this piece is still usable. Thank you." It was merely said for the sake of politeness, almost dismissive as he turned on his heels to finish his task and end his time with the girl.

That is, until the singer decided to interfere.

"You're here to cheer me on, Aimo. Not do dirty work. That's what he's for. Isn't it?""We are all present to assist with rebuilding Smoke's bar." He said pointedly, making direct eye contact with Goodbye. He immediately disliked how she held herself, as if she were somehow above them and free from the burdens they all ( ... )

"Mm! We saw each other in our dreams, so... I recognized her. And her voice." She couldn't help staring as politely as possible while he inspected her offering, being almost uncomfortably stoic about the entire thing. It didn't look broken. Did he think there were termites hidden in it? He was staring at it so intensely that for a brief moment she thought he might have scanners in his eyes, like a machine, but there was no way she would believe any of that ( ... )

Smoke was hoping more people showed up, but he couldn't grudge Goodbye any of that. She had a great voice, and from the sound of it very experienced.

He was so glad that Alchemy had fixed that jukebox.

From across the room as he mingled around, Smoke waved at her, then gave her a thumbs-up. He was grinning quite happily.

After his meeting with Furball, Fugue quickly headed over to the charity event for Smoke's bar. He felt somewhat excited about helping people out, joining the festivities, and acquainting himself with others. Considering what he'd written in the journals promoting this event and encouraging get-togethers among residents, one might consider him very social when he, in fact, easily tired of crowds and attention ( ... )
