wherein Liz has computer troubles

This past week Shadowfall (my laptop) has started doing a peculiar thing where, if I try to adjust the angle of the screen, it abruptly shuts down on me. I'd call it a bluescreen, except while the screen is clearly still ON -- that is, it has a faint subliminal glow that turns black into the deepest hint of twilight -- it's just blank black nothing.

Today it did that to me four times in a row with no provocation. I restarted everything, which did not help, but after I turned it back on from THAT bluescreen, it let me back everything up onto my external hard drive and now seems to be working normally.

...

I should probably take it in to work with me on Monday and have the computer repair place a block and a half from the rental company office look it over. Maybe they can also fix the longstanding issue where Shadowfall refuses to acknowledge the presence of its battery! ...But I'm not especially hopeful on that front.

(I have owned three computers in my adult life. The first was Random Numbers. It developed an interesting glitch that only let me run it in safe mode, which nixed any chance of an internet connection; those were fun times. The second was Thief-of-Always. That one developed a loose connection in the hard drive that I could fix by literally picking the tower up two or three inches off the ground and then dropping it; also fun times. Now I have Shadowfall, with its persistent battery-denial and now inexplicable bluescreen issues. I don't think I have the best luck with computers.)
