"Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," Clint says. He packs his bow away, his jaw tight, his eyes distant. Natasha notes that he hasn't yet looked directly at her.

"Have you ever thought about how hard it is to date a spy? They're all compulsive liars," she says, softly. He looks up at her, barks a laugh that's too hard-edged. But it's laughter.

"You do realise I'm dating you?"

"You're not alright," she says, and she runs through in her head all the different ways she could break this mood for him. She could make him angry -- start a fight between them, dirty tactics and all, and at the end of it they'd make love fiercely and hotly, chasing away the rancour with the easier argument of skin on skin. She could make him sad: she knows all his secrets, all the buttons to push. She could make him want her, and that would be the easiest of all. She could tease him or drag him to bed with her. Either way, he'd stop thinking.

But only for a while.

Natasha takes a deep breath. "Tell me."

Clint looks up at her with honest surprise, and this is easier than she'd thought it would be -- this honesty, this fumbling towards a real solution instead of engineering a temporary one. "Do you mean it?"

"Yes."
