Pepper is asleep. Tony normally begrudges other people their perfectly normal sleep patterns, but she's been pretty busy today, after all. She still looks tired, even with her body relaxed totally in sleep, but her face has lost the lines of pain that had seemed so wrong for her. He hopes she's having good dreams, which is funny, because it's rare for him to bother even about Pepper's dreams and the quality thereof. He loves her, yes, but he knows himself: unlike most human beings, he's fully aware of his own belief that the world revolves around him.
Except maybe not tonight. There's Pepper, sleeping, and there's -- there's the scary part, there's the baby, his baby, laying there in the tiny cot by the bed. This baby with unfairly tiny hands and eyes that are just like his, and whose crying hurts worse than shrapnel in the chest. Tony really doesn't get it, because the world revolving around him has been one of the few constants of his life, the way he sets his compass. Selflessness is barely in his dictionary.
But he would, he really would, he'd do anything for Pepper and for this baby.
