Day 1 @ Queer Camp

Jul 21, 2009 20:45

So, I'm posting YouTube videos about all of this... which will also, eventually, be posted on the Campus Pride blog. But not everybody is all that into YouTube, and I <3 Campus Pride, so I'm all about throwing this out in every forum I've got. So here goes.

I spent most of my first day at Campus Pride en route to Campus Pride--I had to leave Wichita at 6:30 to make it to BWI by 2:30 and, theoretically, to the Towson campus by 4:00. Wichita: We Don't Do Direct Flights. Though leg two of my flight landed early, and I had no checked baggage to pick up, my transport from the airport to Towson proved problematic. I vote NO on Super Shuttle.

I did eventually get to campus. My driver didn't know where the hell he was going, though, so I walked all over all of campus (asking directions from clueless undergrads as I went, and cashing in every karmic credit I've earned in the last 2 years of shepherding freshman into the appropriate wing of the art department) before I found check-in. I wasn't helped by the death of my phone (which would have been avoided, had a 20-minute drive not stretched to a 2-hour one). But I found it. And an impressively cheerful + energetic Towson ambassador guided me to my room, and then to the Den Introductions session.

There, I unwittingly met the guy who ended up being my roommate. He was very cool, and we got along swimmingly, but neither of us actually spent much time sleeping or in our room, so the roommate part didn't end up being terribly germane. Except that I got to be excited about sharing a dorm room/suite with guys. That was cool. We ate dinner; we met our dens; we had a bonfire with s'mores (and VEGAN s'mores, which was only the beginning of the veg-friendly goodness, but more on that later).

And then some of us went off to decorate our mail bags. Remember decorating paper bags to hold your Valentine's Day cards, in the third grade? Yeah, like that. Also provided: stacks and stacks of brightly colored construction paper, crayons, markers. It was absolute genius. I got everything from business cards to anonymous comments about my sexy hair.

Eventually, I went to sleep.
