Cringeworthy Scenes in Movies
This is just a list I made of scenes in movies that make my toes curl. Lots of people being poked with sharp things.
* Spikes in Krull -- The tertiary good guys end up in a room with spikes slowly coming out of the walls. We see a few people getting impaled very slowly. Lends credence to my theory that anticipation is the best part of storytelling. Just having spikes pop out and kill everyone would have been much less horrifying.
* Spear in armpit in The Devil's Backbone -- Ouch! A guy gets a wooden spear in his armpit. Then in his forearm! Bad times!
* Glass in foot in Akira -- Tetsuo steps on a broken glass and it sticks way into his foot, then we see him pull it out. He seems strangely unbothered by it, afterwards, though.
* Needle in eye in A Fire in the Sky -- A guy gets abducted by aliens and they stick a needle in his eye, very slowly, while he quite understandably freaks out. Actually, we never see the needle penetrate his eye. Ick!
* Stepping on a nail in Army of Darkness -- My fair lady! Ha!
* Slapping a bunch of fishhooks in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids -- This is played for laughs, but the guy puts his hand on a bunch of fishhooks on his shirt and his hand sticks, and that's just terrible. I have a vivid fear of fishhooks, due to my grampa telling me a story about someone getting a fishhook stuck in his cheek, a picture of how to remove a fishhook from a Scout Handbook, and my friend using fishhooks for the GI Joe Alpine's grappling hook. My fear may be exaggerated, but a handful of fishhooks seems really unpleasant.
