I've found that there are four kinds of people in service jobs, directly dealing with customers:
1) People who are truly and sincerely friendly and conversational.
2) People who are quiet, but can be friendly and conversational once the ice is broken.
3) People who seem friendly, but you can tell that they can't wait to be done talking with you so they can get back to doing something else.
4) People who are just openly unfriendly.
Actually, these types of personality can be applied to people in general. As I age, I find that I have no time for the latter two types of people. I've grown very intolerant of the third type of person, who does the generic, thoughtless conversational stuff, but just nods blankly and says, "Uh-huh," to whatever you say. Maybe it's because I spend so much time on the internet, home of the mentally and emotionally backward, but the first type of person seems to be becoming rarer and rarer. Maybe again it's the fear-based society we've been nuturing for the last few decades.
As I become more confident and open, I notice people unable to meet my gaze. Were those people always there or do I just notice them now? I've become intolerant of people who are the way I was just a few years ago, which is kind of awful, but it's true. I'm getting old, and there's not time to try and fix the broken anymore.
