Had Hinata not been leading the way, Gai would have been far ahead of her as they approached Veles's second apartment complex. Indeed, he took the steps four at a time (at least until realizing that the right apartment happened to be downstairs).
The strange surroundings, the hostile authorities... none of it mattered now. He had known in his heart that his three students had to be alive -- he would accept no less from the universe -- but all his fervent belief couldn't match the slenderest thread of possibility that they might meet again in person. And for that possibility, Gai would have outrun time itself.
