something's fishy

I thought about making a post about the election--I even wrote part of it--but then I reread what I had written and consigned it all to perdition. What I think about the election and five bucks will get you a meal at Mickey D's.

I did amuse myself slightly at my mother's expense (she's a major Republican) by blaming Obama for anything that went wrong while we were Skyping. "Poor Skype quality? It could be sunspots... OBAMA sunspots." "Oh no, Pippa tripped! Did OBAMA trip you, poor baby?"

I went to a class today about First Nations food, taught by two Nisga'a. They brought salted black cod, baked spring salmon and fried sockeye salmon to try. I have had salted black cod before and didn't like it so I was shocked at how much I liked the cod they brought. Before, the salted cod I had was very tough, the fishiness and oiliness overpowering. This wasn't like that at all; it was tender and luxurious, no pungent fishiness, with the heavy salt attractive in the same way that salt tastes wonderful on caramel. Amazingly tasty.

The baked salmon was a simple brown sugar and soy sauce marinade, which I have never done but seeing how wonderfully it set off the natural taste of the fish, I've got to try it.

I need to cook more fresh salmon. I haven't been to the fishmonger for such a long time.

food glorious food, politics me off
