Mix tape for dimethirwen! And anyone else who wants to download it. But mostly Carmen.
Apologies for never actually answering your questions about how we were doing the mixtape swap, I just decided tonight that I felt like accomplishing something that was not actually an accomplishment. This is what I do instead of flower arranging I guess. Don't feel like you need to get me my mixtape immediately/ever.
Playlist (with commentary in spoiler text, in case you want to listen without being primed by me): 1. Skrillex - Bangarang EP - Bangarang f. Sirah [Spoiler (click to open)]I like doing housework to this song. It makes me want to rewatch Hook though. 2. Purity Ring - Shrines - Lofticries [Spoiler (click to open)]I've talked extensively about this one here. 3. Charli XCX - You're the One EP - You're the One (St. Lucia Remix) [Spoiler (click to open)]Originally I had the original version here, which is much more ~dramatic~ and perhaps flows better with the mix, but I have to use the remix because IMO it's a much better version of the song. Much more lush, gets rid of the awkward intro that the original has and focuses mostly on the spirit of that gorgeous refrain. 4. Pristina - Stars and Sirens - Sundown [Spoiler (click to open)]Almost certainly the most obscure track on this mixtape, and that's counting the Chinese indie band... Pristina are a side project by the Echoing Green's DJ where he collabs with various female vocalists. I have no idea why this album didn't get more attention, every single song on it is breathtaking. 5. M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming - Midnight City [Spoiler (click to open)]I hated this song the first time I heard it. I didn't start to like it until about the third listen. It just kept coming up on Songza. I think that the harsh... synth? riff in the beginning takes some getting used to. I think it's one of those songs you won't like unless you try dancing to it. It works REALLY well for doing dishes because the rhythm is a back-and-forth one. 6. Air - Talkie Walkie - Alone in Kyoto [Spoiler (click to open)]Ok, yes, everyone has probably heard this one, because of Lost in Translation, but I can't help it, it's my favorite Air song. 7. BONNIE PINK - re*PINK - Communication (Atom Remix) [Spoiler (click to open)]My favorite frustration song. 8. Emancipator - Safe in the Steep Cliffs - Nevergreen [Spoiler (click to open)]This is an Asian-influenced trip hop instrumental. Emancipator is a student of the late great Nujabes. I wanted to put a Nujabes track on this mixtape but it didn't fit. I would have put either "Latitude" or "Kumomi" if you want to look those tracks up. They are very different from Nevergreen, much more jazzy. 9. Flight Facilities - Bang Gang EP - Crave You (Adventure Club Remix) [Spoiler (click to open)]There's something sincere in the singer's voice which mitigates the essential spoiled whininess of the lyrics. The remix provides an edge that the song needs. This one works really well for doing tidying (can you tell I'm a housewife yet). 10. Cold Fairyland - 在城市上空飞翔 (Flying Over the City) - Sea Rose [Spoiler (click to open)]This is a musical setting of the imagist poem "Sea Rose" by H.D (I give the link because God help you trying to understand Lin Di's English). What I love about this song is the underlying menace beneath the fluttery, delicate ruffles, which fits the poem. At first glance you think "Oh, sea rose, what a pretty sounding poem" but then you realize it's about a dead, rotting rose on a beach. Also, the music makes me think of snakes. Make of that what you will.
A mix of dubstep, synthpop, trip hop, et cetera. Forty minutes of music. It's all work-safe except for the last three seconds of "Bangarang", which contains an f-bomb.
I actually did put some thought into the song order, so please listen to it straight through, at least the first time. :)
Odd number tracks are uptempo, and evens are downtempo, roughly speaking.
