Last night around 1:30am, Pippa wanted to nurse and it was less than two hours since the last time she nursed. No amount of rocking or shushing was cutting it. The crying had gone for like ten minutes. I was feeling stubborn.
Finally out of desperation I used sign language as I spoke clearly and firmly. (Signed words in all-caps as per usual format in signing books.)
"ALL DONE! ALL DONE! Time to SLEEP. The MILK is ALL DONE. ALL DONE. SLEEP now. The MILK is ALL DONE. SLEEP now. MILK later. I promise. SLEEP now. SLEEP."
She stopped crying and just looked at me for a while. She reached out and touched my face a little and we just looked at each other. Then she rolled over and went to sleep!
A few hours later she woke up and I nursed her, as per the promise. And that was all.
So she only nursed twice last night, which is fantastic, because she's been nursing four or five times or even more at night, and waking other times to boot, and I've been on the edge of wanting to night wean her entirely in hopes of getting some uninterrupted sleep. If she can keep it down to once or twice a night, I'm fine continuing that way for months.
We'll see how tonight goes, but I thought it was amusing regardless.
