Planting and deplanting

May 25, 2007 09:11

After work last night I finally planted the Ohio perennials I bought weeks ago. I put in two black-eyed susan plants, a balloon flower, an ox-eye daisy, and two kinds of salvia in the bed to the right of the house front. I also broadcasted several packets of meadow flower seeds. I think that's the first time in my life I have ever planted from seed. The packets assure me that will have flowers by the end of June.

Then I went 'round back to address the ivy and shrub that are encroaching upon the a/c unit and the back stairs. I swear I only meant to trim. I ended up hacking away at the ivy and clearing a large swath in front of the a/c unit, as well as pruning away as many of the branches of the shrub (that I don't know that name of) as I could. I really dislike that plant; mostly because it tries fairly successfully to work its way into the a/c unit, as well as trying to get into the house through the back door. Secretly I call it Audrey (from Little Shop of Horrors). There isn't enough room in that space for such a wide-spreading plant. One of these days I'll get out the spade and dig it up.

It seems someone was less than pleased about my planting activities. When I went outside to water them this morning I found three of the plants uprooted and laying, otherwise untouched, beside their holes. I suspect a vole or shrew found the plants to be in the way of their digging activities. I'll replant them this afternoon, maybe in a slightly different spot. It's anybodies guess whether they'll stay.
