Shiki: A horror manga based off a popular novel. The pacing and connection with the characters are all done very well. The author, Ono Fuyumi, visits a popular theme and adds a surprisingly realistic twist, and how different people cope with a difficult and abhorrent situation. If I'm understanding this properly, Tokyopop is ceasing operations in North America. Although anime/manga was always existent in America -- early series such as Speed Racer (Mach Go Go Go in Japan), Transformers, and Ranma ½ are good examples -- I wouldn't say it became popular until the past decade or so. Probably one of the most famous BL series is Junjou Romantica. It originally was scanlated by the now-defunct group beautiful-soup, until the project moved to the also now-defunct group mochi*mochi. I knew on some level the series wouldn't end after the Future Arc, especially since Kawahira hasn't been fully developed. However more than half the series has taken place there, and I became accustomed to it so I guess I assumed it would end there.
