“So, Ianto, did I mean anything to you or was I merely a means to an end?” Jack asked, seemingly out of the blue one day.

Ianto blinked and turned to look at his boss. “I’m not sure what you mean, sir.”

“I think you know exactly what I mean. Did I - no, did we mean anything to you? Or was screwing a relatively pleasant way to keep me distracted?”

"I don’t know how you want me to answer that.”

Jack sighed in frustration. “Somehow I knew you would say that.”

Ianto looked slightly uncomfortable. “I just don’t want to mislead you again.”

“I suppose that’s meant to comfort me.”

"What do you want me to say, Jack? That I let you fuck me so you would be too tired at night to go looking around the basement? That she and I planned it all out and decided that me seducing you would probably work better than her trying?” Ianto grated out, glaring at the other man.

Jack returned the glare calmly. “Yes. That’s what I want to hear. If that is the truth.”

“And I should be completely honest with you … why? You’re not honest with us. Why should I be anymore honest with you than you are with me?” Ianto sneered.

“I need to know I can trust all the members of my team.”

“That’s crap, Jack. You knew Suzie and look what she did. You know Owen and he went off on his own, almost killed someone. But you still trust him. Why I did what I did is none of your business.”

“I guess that’s fair enough. On a personal level. Professionally, however, I do need to know. When we’re out there, our lives are in each other’s hands.”

Ianto laughed bitterly. “You, sir, are full of shit. Do you even believe this crap you’re spouting? ‘Our lives are in each other’s hands.’ Please. I told you what I would do given the chance.”

Jack nodded. “Yes, you did. Now prove it.”

He stood and casually tossed his revolver to Ianto, who caught it reflexively. “What am I supposed to do with this?”

“You have the choice right now to shoot me or not. To watch me suffer, I believe you said. This is your chance.”

Ianto glanced from Jack to the gun and back, disbelief written on his face.

“Go ahead and check. It’s loaded. Pull the trigger and watch me suffer. It’s what you wanted, right?”

"Is this some kind of penance you think you have to do? Guilt over murdering the woman that I love?” Ianto scoffed.

Jack shook his head, a wry grin twisting his lips. “No. No, Ianto, I feel very little guilt over executing a monster who had already slaughtered three people. I…"

“Three?” Ianto interrupted. “Not three, two. Dr. Tanazaki and the delivery girl. That’s two.”

“And you. That’s three.”

"She didn’t kill me. Banged me up when she threw across the room, sure. But she didn’t kill me.” Ianto’s voice dropped to a whisper. “She couldn’t.”

“If you say so.” Ianto sighed. “If she had killed me, we wouldn’t be standing here having this conversation, now would we?”

"Whatever you say.”

“You know what,” Ianto began, placing the revolver on the desk between them. “It doesn’t really matter if she killed me or not. I’m not going to shoot you. If you’re willing to let me, it obviously won’t be enough.”

"And what do you think would be enough?”

Ianto met Jack’s gaze, a lethal expression on his face. “Something that would make you understand how much I miss her. Don’t fret, sir. I’m sure I’ll think of something. I’m very handy.”
