Had my hip core decompression surgery a couple of weeks ago and am healing nicely, getting along mostly by wheelchair, sometimes on crutches. In short, it's been less painful and just generally less of an ordeal than I thought it'd be, so all in all, I'm pretty happy. The living arrangement for the duration of my recovery (~four more weeks) is a little less than desirable, though, and things grow ever-increasingly terse and stifling with my housemate day by day, but that's material for some other entry.
Went in for a followup with my surgeon today and one of the things she mentioned is that I can start rubbing scar-reducing medicines or vitamin e across the vertical three inch incision along my left thigh to reduce the degree of the permanent scarring. When I asked her what she recommended for "scar-reducing medicines" she clearly didn't know of any, struggled for a moment, and then told me maybe I ought to just use the vitamin e. Super useful info, doc, but then, I guess surgeons are more cutters than medicinal wizards, to be fair. It seems like something maybe you ought to know, though, if you're going to be mentioning it to likely every patient that comes under your care.
Anyway, I'm asking you, my increasingly limited readership: do you know what sort of salves or cremes or treatments or herbal whatsits I should apply to best reduce long-term scarring for a deep-ish, three inch long cut? My body pretty much already looks like some sadist's canvas, but all the same. Anybody have any testimonials, able to recommend any products? I'm open to and hoping for suggestions, so don't be shy. Thanks.
