I warned you..I have lots to say...just remember, these are just my opinions and thoughts...feel free to tell me you disagree (I love a good debate) but please no flames! :)
This blog will not be particularly Sparky, but don't worry, there will be a very shippy blog post soon (I have lots to say about lots of ships! lol)
As I said before, Season 2 is my favorite...at least right now. I feel that this season offered a lot of character development (both positive and negative) and pushed the envelope, addressing some hot button topics. And I love that...I know TV shows are supposed to be entertainment, an opportunity to escape RL for a while, but I personally LOVE when a TV show makes you think and encourages debate and discussion. I like to exercise my brain...
I have watched Critical Mass more times that I can count (or even care to admit actually) because it is one of those episodes...seemingly meant simply to entertain but just screams out to me "you really need to think about this!!" (Good luck muddling through my thoughts on this...I really do tend to ramble....)
This episode is huge on character development imo....especially for Elizabeth...and not all good stuff either. (Don't worry, I still love her...even more perhaps, despite the negativity...)
We're supposed to always love the heroes in our shows. They always make the right decisions, they always do the right thing, they always come out on top...but I don't think we see that in CM. We get to see our heroes be very very human, and fallible, and make BIG mistakes. They flirt with this in SG1, but never really nailed it...more often than not, the trouble SG1 gets into is more a case of 'wrong place, wrong time' and Jack's sarcasm pissing off some alien. It's refreshing to see SGA do it well....
Elizabeth, imo, is pretty arrogant throughout most of this episode, and the first time I saw it, I literally said to the tv "she needs to watch herself or this is going to end badly" (yea, hubby gave me a weird look, like he always does, when I talked to the tv..I just can't help it!) And, I was right. Kavanaugh hit the nail squarely on the head when he accused her of making decisions based on emotion rather than logic. I think she does that a lot, and most of the time it's the right way to go. This time, though, she was so sure in her conviction that Kavanaugh was guitly - due to her feelings about him - that she lost sight of the bigger picture. And then, when Rodney accuses Cadman, she accuses him of letting his feelings interfere, totally not seeing that that is exactly what she's doing with Kavanaugh. Again...it's so beautifully flawed and human, which made me love it even more. How many times in my life have I accused someone of doing something for a certain reason, not realizing (or willing to admit) that I've done the exact same thing!? Yay for art imitating life! It was also a little uncomfortable (in that pushing the limits and making a favorite character imperfect and unlikable) to see Elizabeth, peace-loving diplomat who won't pick up a weapon, decide to use any means necessary to force information from someone. Desperate means call for desperate measures, I know...but to see her very 'normal personly' (so a term, I'm copyrighting it! lol) be pushed to the limits, willing to compromise who she is and what she stands for, is, strangely, a little refreshing. Like I said, I love the idea of the flawed hero (think Batman...). I loved seeing her make mistakes.
Another thought on CM...I LOVED the choices they made, letting Rachel sing. The song is moving, her voice is beautiful, and the way they shot the scenes, with the music constantly underneath the action, pushing it all along. It gives me chills and makes me cry every time.
