My beloved brother, Kenny Knox, died last night little before midnight from pneumonia. I got here in plenty of time to say my goodbyes. He was surrounded by people who love him and it was very peaceful at the end. he was well taken care of by hospice and he was not in pain and he was not scared. we took off his oxygen mask after giving him some last morphine and Ativan and he was gone with great dignity and grace within 4 min. The last 15 months have been a long downhill slide for him, with things taking a sharp turn for the worst in October when his stomach stopped working and we had to insert a J tube into his intestines to feed him. we are sad and bewildered and will miss him every day, but we are glad to know he is at peace.
I am beyond grateful that when I was home at Christmas I got to see him healthy and happy and alert.
Our family friend, Judy Jaffe, said it very well when she said that he was an extraordinary person who gave many many people the opportunity to be their best selves.
This is the first time in my life I have lost somebody this close to me and the first time in my life I was there to witness someone's passing. I was honored to be there with him and send him on his way with all my love.
We have not yet finalized plans for his memorial service, but there will be one on either Saturday or Monday. I will post about them here as soon as I can.
Thank you everyone for your well wishes and condolences.
kenny,
family
