Merry Christmas!

We are having a white Christmas here in Colorado. The snow started falling last night, with soft little pings as it hit the windows. It was still snowing this morning when we woke and the flakes have only increased in size and density since then. Tomorrow we are going snow-shoeing, and sledding will also occur sometime right soon here.

I woke up just before 10am, remembered that it was Christmas and was instantly wide awake. Tish took a little bit of persuading to get him out of bed, but he threw on his new fuzzy bathrobe, which I had him open last night, and then things were better.

We took our time opening presents and my parents are only now cooking breakfast. The dogs (all 5 of them, o_O) are currently behaving themselves. My brother Kenny has been feeling well both physically and emotionally for the last few days and he is smiling and singing behind me, watching the people and the dogs and enjoying the Thelonius Monk cd Tish gave my mom for Christmas. (Kenny loves music, as does most of my family, but he gets a little sick of my mom's classical and opera cd's. I can't entirely say I blame him.) We are planning a lazy day with a lot of sitting around. We might watch a movie, or read--two of my mother's presents to me included enough gorgeous Noro yarn to make a sweater with and a set of interchangeably-sized circular needles, so I'm going to spend at least a little bit of time looking at knitting patterns until I find the perfect thing to make with my beautiful bounty.

I almost hesitate to say this, for fear that I will jinx it, but Christmas in my family is rather like Hallmark would have us believe it ought to be--full of warmth, genuine joy in getting to be together, good food, happy dogs. It's almost alarming, really, but I am so very grateful for this little haven of peace as the year closers. Somehow it always seems like it's all downhill from here, and though it will be cold and dark for some time yet I know that other kinds of warmth will be returning soon.

Merry Christmas, everyone. I wish you peace and joy and beauty.
