(crossposted to tagalog)

ptiza_schastya asked for some Filipino terms for food in an earlier post in the tagalog community. I thought it would be fun to start compiling a list of these things, but there are just so many... so I decided to at least make a list of Tagalog translations for common vegetables and fruits ( Read more... )

tagalog, psa

jackfruit = durian

actually, jackfruit is "langka". durian remains unchanged.

grapefruit = suha

suha is more popularly known as "pomelo" in english. grapefruit and pomelo belong to the same family, but they are still a tad different because grapefruits are less pulpy and are more bitter.

I have no idea what most of those look or taste like.

Oh, and technically speaking, a tomato is a fruit!

It is claimed that for culinary purposes it is a vegetable because it is served as part of the pain meal but that would mean pineapple is a vegetable too due to the hawaiian pizza.

I seem to remember someone trying to convince me it was technically neither a fruit or vegetable but a berry!

My dictionary says 'beans'. But I wouldn't want to say either it or your mother is wrong.

:O!

out of curiosity, which dictionary do you use?

i used to have the english-tagalog and tagalog-english volumes by fr. leo james. i kind of neglected them and the next time i saw them again, they were drenched in floodwater and ripped to shreds.
