Last night's presentation of Steampunk 101 was a big disappointment--especially considering the amount of time I sunk into research and preparing it. There were four of us there: me, the librarian/wife, and two people who seemed to have shown up out of idle curiosity rather than actual interest. While doing the research, I feel like an an enthusiastic but rather boring bystander as my creative muse seems to have utterly deserted me sometime over the last few years. I think it was probably a combination of realizing I wasn't actually having much fun in the SCA whilst the office ground the life force out of me over the course of that same 3-4 year time period.
ealdthryth says the presentation itself was great (which I am hoping is not pure wifely hyperbole). I did have the timing nearly perfect and covered a vast array of topics. The wife is thinking it would get a better reception at a convention where there is a built-in audience. I remain unconvinced.
My disappointment may actually be somewhat liberating. Our diminished interest in the SCA is an opportunity to eliminate clutter from our lives. Most people who do any sort of camping in the SCA have two sets of everything--the stuff they live with day to day, and the duplicate medieval/oid stuff they use for SCA events. We're no different. We've got a stash of craft supplies that we're not likely to ever use again, though repurposing some of it for steampunk would be appealing--if I knew I would actually do something creative with it. Perhaps this diminished creative capacity will lead to a purge of clutter and random junk with which someone else could be more creative.
It would be somewhat liberating and definitely nice to get some of that living space back....
The Case of the Disappearing Feline Fu
Normally, the cats camp out with us when we settle in our chairs/couch for the evening. The last couple of nights, no cats have been in evidence until close to bed time. What mischief are they perpetuating out of our line of sight? We've heard various thumps and the patter of paws along the counter tops and cabinets of the kitchen during the course of the evenings. Is the kitchen floor still made of lava?
Spring Break is Obviously Over
This week has been HORRIBLE for the purposes of commuting. It seems like my fellow denizens of the Interstate highways completely forgot how to drive during their week-long sabbaticals. This morning, people all dropped to 10 miles an hour under the speed limit at the barest hit of a blue light. Thank goodness no K-Marts are visible from the Interstate. Another sports car got splattered by a tractor trailer--or else the towing company neglected to pick it up yesterday and it caused another clog in traffic today. And it seemed like there were a LOT more people on the road than normal.
I keep having to remind myself that I could be living in catastrophic commuting environments such as DC, NYC, Boston, Atlanta, or LA. It doesn't help.
