With the apparent collapse of civic authority, much of the "Big Easy" has become the fiefdom for the Lord of the Flies. Sporaic gunfire. Violence. An epidemic of looting - even with NOLA's "finest" taking their 'fair share". This has gone far beyond raiding the local supermarket for diapers, food and drinking water. Don't believe me? Go read some of the posts in katrinacane - esp. those by interdictor. Or just check CNN and other media feeds.
The most unsettling was a report by cobaltgreen about how looter's were trying to break into the Children's Hospital late last night, threatening the hospital's staff and patients in the process. Yeah, they're looking for "food" - more like meds for their drug addicted asses. Personally, this disgusted me so much that I won't hesistate "air-conditioning" their drug-addled brain pans..
If you were trapped in NO - what would you do? Hide until help arrives? Form up a local neighborhood militia? Join in the "free for all"?
Now just image what would happen if there was an 9.0 mag earthquake in the New Madrid fault? Even a small asteroid/comet strike off the Eastern Seaboard?
It doesn't take much to tear off the veneer of 'civilization' and revert to the our animal past...
