Katrina +2
I've been watching some of the TV coverage, reading CNN (and other news feeds) and keeping up with postings to
katrinacane. This is pretty unsettling and disturbing stuff - esp. with all the looting/unrest against the backdrop of flooding, death and destruction. But there has been also dramatic rescues and amazing tales of survival amidst the growing chaos.
So on here and on the
atlanta community, I've offered my spare bedroom for inexpensive 'rent' for hurricane refugees. The bedroom needs to be steam-cleaned (Piner had wrecked the crapet ..err, carpet last year with his sickness), but I also have a large pull-out couch in the living room that could be used for the interum. The 'cost' - 300/month, but if I get help cleaning the room, or they are low on $$ - this can certainly be adjusted. In this way, I could help those in need and hopefully offset some of the costs of my recent emergency room visit ala fireants.
Good News!
First and foremost - I have finally completed my book on Galaxies last night. All I need to do is make a few last minute checks and then send the second half to the publisher (Springer-Verlang). With luck, it will be out before the end of this year. WOOT, I say ..WOOT!
I'm also one of the main speakers at this years Peach State Star party being held on November 2 -6, 2005. Go forth and read my short talk summary and brief bio by
following this link and making with the "clinky". And to make with the "pretty" - here's perhaps the finest Mars image I've taken (on Sunday morning):
Next post - Dragon*con preparations and info!
