Austin City Limits Festival, 9.27.08

Jay and I decided to spend this day together since we knew Sunday, we'd be spending it apart (during the fest).

Here's what Jay and I decided to see on the second day of ACL. See previous entry for rating scale.

Saturday:

* 11:45am - 12:30pm Mugison (AT&T blue room)

Rating: 4. He gave it his all, but for some reason the music didn't fit there. Not sure what it was, but oh well.

* 12:30pm - 1:30pm Fleet Foxes (AMD)

Rating: 5. Jay "dragged" me to these guys, and they were the unexpected surprise of the fest. Imagine My Morning Jacket with beautiful harmonies, and you got this band. Their stage banter was awesome just the same too.

* 1:30pm - 2:30pm The Fratellis (AT&T blue room)

Rating: 3. They were the most disappointing act we saw. They sounded decent enough, but the leader singer started crabbing about the heat and nearly said, but not in so many words, that the gig wasn't worth playing through the heat. Fuck you, man, you don't really hear us complaining about it, do you? That really turned me off of the band, in general. That said, they also didn't have much stage chemistry. I don't care if it's 90 degrees, you're supposed to bring it at a festival.

* 2:30pm - 3:30pm Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (AMD)

Rating: 4.5. This score would be much higher if the show was over an hour, but that's not their fault. Sharon has so much energy and passion for performing, you'd have to be (figuratively) blind and deaf to not enjoy this show.

* 3:30pm - 4:30pm CSS (AT&T blue room)

Rating: 4. The sun was at its peak during this time, but I had fun listening to them play these songs. Judging from the stage screen, they did too.

* 4:30pm - 5:30pm Erykah Badu (AT&T)

Rating: 4. I really need to get more of her stuff. She's got an incredible voice--who cares that she was just wearing a T-shirt and black pants?

* 6:30pm - 7:30pm John Fogerty (AMD)

Rating: 5. Okay, I know CCR and some of this guy's work, but I always thought "meh." But he really gave it his all and looked like he was having the time of his life. I'm glad we saw this!

* 7:30pm - 8:15pm The Black Keys (AT&T blue room)

Rating: 4. The sound quality for this was questionable, but they still played really well. I want to see them again but in an indoor venue.

The pics from this day's shows, mostly taken by Jay, are viewable here.

Mugison:

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (crappy quality, sorry):

The crowd for CSS:

Music-wise, this day was 50% excellent, but the massive amount of people was nearly unbearable. This would be a reason I might not consider another fest, it was that bad.
