There are always times like these when I think of you,
And I wonder if you ever think of me
(A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton)
Little eight-years-old Jung Yunho fidgets nervously in his seat as he waits patiently for the nurse to clean his dirty cuts and bruises. It wasn’t too long ago (twenty minutes actually) that he was chased down by a bunch of upperclassmen and was bullied. And all for what? Because he’s a new student.

Already, he can hear the string of questions his mother will ask him when he gets home. He just hopes he can answer most of them without having her to report back to the school about their lack of safety and responsibility.

He winces when the nurse applies a little too much pressure on a tender spot of his cheek and scoots away a little at a time from her hand and cotton ball. She stops and gives him an apologetic look and a genuine smile before reaching out to finish the mess on his face.

Yunho puckers his lower lip, almost into a pout, and the nurse chuckles softly as she pats him lightly on the back. “I’m almost done dear, just a few more.”

It’s exactly seven minutes later when Yunho finally gets out of the nurse’s office with a sigh. He turns at a corner and jumps, gasping in surprise when he sees the side view of a familiar face - Kim JaeJoong. “You…you’re - you’re still here?”

No answer, just silence.

Seconds turn into minutes and Yunho wipes his tiny palms on his pants, feeling insecure and nervous as the silence continues. He looks down at his feet and shifts his weight from one side to the next. Licking his lips, he finally mutters, “T-thanks but I didn’t - I mean I appreciate it and all, but you didn’t have-”

The boy slowly turns his head and arcs a brow in annoyance. “Is that all you’re going to say after I just helped you?”

He opens his mouth to retort but closes them when he sees the small teasing smile. Yunho looks back down at his feet. He feels guilty and awful, not knowing how to repay the boy for helping him during their morning recess. If only he had known how to fight and defend himself against the three older kids - maybe then he would end up getting a week’s detention instead of the boy.

“You can repay me by calling me hyung.”

Yunho immediately looks up from the ground, eyes widen. “What?”

“Call me hyung just like you promised.” JaeJoong simply shrugs and crosses his arms over his chest. “And I’ll forget that you were the one who got me into detention.”

Yunho snorts. “I didn’t ask you to come and-” A hand reaches out and a hard pinch on his left cheek silences him instantly.

He’s not sure why, but memories, from his earlier years with JaeJoong, begin to unravel in the back of his mind. A scene of two little boys playing in the sandbox together on a late summer appears, and finally Yunho remembers. It was his last day of vacation in California, and he had begged his mom to play with JaeJoong one last time before he went back to North Carolina.

“I’m going back to my home tomorrow morning. But I promise that I’ll come back and visit you! And when I do, I’ll finally call you, hyung - okay?”

“My mom says promises are meant to be broken.”

“Only promises that I can’t keep.”

To be honest, Yunho’s quite surprised that JaeJoong still remembers. A full minute passes by and finally tears begin to pool at the corner of his eyes as JaeJoong pulls his cheek a little harder. “H-hyung,” he whimpers in pain.

“Respect your elders.” The raven hair lectures and finally lets go, smiling pleasingly to himself when he hears the word he has been waiting for since Yunho’s arrival.

“You’re just older by a couple of weeks.”

“Come on,” JaeJoong says, completely ignoring Yunho’s comment, and grabs his hand. “Mr. Swan is going to complain to my parents again if I don’t go to class soon.”

Yunho doesn’t answer but smiles at their linked hands as JaeJoong leads the way back to their classroom.

Author’s Note: Hey everyone, I am certainly not back from the dead yet (for those who know me), but I am slowly trying to get my muses back from vacation. Hopefully it starts working so I can update. I’m thinking of making this into a mini verse under Paper Stars, but we’ll see how my dumb muses go. Comments are loved.
